Bosch MAFS Mass Air Flow Sensor F00C-2G2-029 - BMW M5, 540i (e39)/Z8 (e52)/740i-iL (e38)/X5 (e53)
Compatible with the Following BMW Models:
MAFS Kit Contents:
- New Bosch MAFS - Mass Air Flow Sensor (part# F00C 2G2 029)**
- Security Torx Key "6-star"***
** Please note that the sensor housing(s) are not included. You will be able to reuse the sensor housing(s) that you currently have.
*** Please note that about 10% of M5 (e39) models require a "5-star" Torx key in order to change the MAF sensor. We include a "6-star" Torx key free of charge with the new sensor, however, if your M5 (e39) uses "5-star" Torx screws, you can purchase our optional "5-star" Torx key set (select above when ordering).
The MAF Sensor measures the flow rate of the air the enters your BMW's plenum. The rate of flow that the MAF Sensor measures is then communicated to your BMW's ECU (DME), which then determines how much fuel needs to be injected into each of the cylinders. A faulty MAF Sensor will cause your BMW to exhibit performance problems.
MAFS (Mass Air Flow Sensors) seem to begin to fail between 30,000 to 60,000 miles. MAF sensors fail because dirt and oily substances get baked onto them over time. A failing MAF sensor will cause your BMW to exhibit intermittent problems such as a rough idle and power-loss. Some BMW owners have literally felt that their car became noticably more powerful after installing a new MAF sensor. These owners probably had deteriorating MAFS for a while, and did not notice the slow reduction in performance, until the MAF sensor failed completely, or were near the point of complete failure.
Sometimes the SES (Service Engine Soon/Check Engine Light) will light-up and a MAF sensor error code will register (this can be checked by your BMW mechanic or with a code reader (see the Peake Research tools that we sell). However, small amounts of impurities can collect on MAF sensors over time, which can lead to driveability problems before the MAF sensor is dirty enough to cause the SES/CEL light to come on. Replacing the worn MAF sensor with a new MAF sensor can make your BMW drive like it should.
If one has to change their BMW MAF sensor, one can simply visit their local BMW dealer and pay close to $500 for each new MAF sensor (housings and installation included). However, there is a much less expensive alternative, which is to purchase the kit that we are offering for sale here. The BMW replacement part includes the MAF Sensor housing, which does not need to be replaced. All you need to replace is the sensor within the housing.
Some BMW owners have tried to clean their MAF sensor, however, this has not been successful, with most seeing better performance for only a few days. Replacing the old MAF sensor with a new MAF sensor is the only effective solution.
Optional UFMotorsport IATS Relocation Kit (only for the M5 e39 and Z8 e52):
The MAF sensors in the BMW M5 (e39) have a built-in air temperature sensor. The M5's computer (ECU/DME) only uses the air temperature reading from one of the two MAF sensors. The UFMotorsport IATS that we sell is a great modification, and will allow you to relocate the temperature sensor to a cooler location to allow for better performance. For details on the UFMotorsport IATS, please click on the link at the bottom of this page . The UFMotorsport IATS modification is not required in order to replace your MAFS, it is purely an optional performance upgrade.
