Here is a list of mods that we recommend. There are many more possibilities, but we feel that the ones below highlight what most M5 (e39) owners go with:

Priority 1 (must haves):
  • UFMotorsport IATS
  • BeastPower Rear Sway Bar Brackets by TC Design
  • Eibach Front/Rear Sway Bars
  • Rogue Engineering Short-Shifter + WSR
  • Bimmian Solaris Bulbs
  • Bentley e39 Service Manual
  • Exhaust
Priority 2 (for handling):
  • KW, Bilstein or H&R Coilover Suspension
  • Strong-Strut Front Strut Brace
Priority 3 (for power):
  • Active Autowerke CAI or GruppeM CAI
  • Supersprint Headers
  • Supersprint Racing Catalytic Converters
  • 3.45 Rear Differential
  • Active Autowerke Software
  • VF-Engineering Supercharger with GIAC Software (coming soon)
Priority 4 (general):
  • SPEC Stage 3+ Clutch + SPEC Lightweight Flywheel
  • Brembo or StopTech Big Brake Kit (BBK)
Priority 5 (for fun):
  • DPE Wheels
  • Front Splitters
  • Rear Diffuser
  • Roof Spoiler
  • Gear Knob
  • Pedals
  • Hand-Brake Handle
  • Black Kidney Grilles
  • Bimmian Headlight and Foglight Bulbs
Cheers, Daniel.

thanks daniel, its great to have somebody with so much knowledge on what is a very technical piece of engineering. I think the first thing i will change is the exhaust system[back boxs] the car needs to sound more like a muscle car? Only problem is the shipping costs to the uk!

You are welcome. We also ship products from the UK, but those that come from the US (even after including shipping, UK VAT and UK customs), usually end up costing less than buying in the UK from an alternative source.

We usually ship large orders to the UK via BAX Global international air-freight (www.baxglobal.com), which takes about 3 business days to arrive and can cost as little as £90 to ship a set of back-boxes to anywhere in the UK.

Cheers, Daniel.

Back-boxes???

Awesome list Daniel...thanks for shredding my credit card balance for the next 2-3 years! Seriously though, it does shed some light on how to prioritize the next toy I 'have' to have.

Could you edit/modify this list somewhat for us 540i/6-sp MT owners? i.e., the UF Motorsports IATS is not required for the M62/TU engine (right?) Also, the Tubi is not available for the E39 540i. Any other changes you would recommend?

"Back-Boxes" is the term used in the UK for mufflers. The word "Exhaust" is problematic, as the exhaust system starts with the headers, goes to the catalytic converters, then the resonators and lastly the muffler cans (or back-boxes in the UK).

The 540i and other 5-series models can benefit from almost all of the mods in the above list. The IATS is of no benefit to the 540i, and the Tubi is not available for models other than the M5. The 540i has fewer muffler choices, but good options are the Supersprint and Eisenmann Race. Britalman will also have a version for the 540i within a few months.

Cheers, Daniel.
