Brembo Brakes - Installation/Use Notes (e39)

The Brembo Big Brake Kits (BBKs) for the 5-series (e39) are basically bolt-on kits, except that the rear wheel hubs have a backing plate that needs to either be bent back or trimmed with a grinder. The backing plate needs to be trimmed otherwise the larger than stock Brembo rotor will make contact with it. The correct installation method is to grind the backing plate, but the fast method is to bend it back. I highly recommend you use an installer who will take the extra hour to grind the backing plate. The other part of the installation (actually part of the post-installation) process, is the need to bed-in the new pads. This is simple, but because a series of 80MPH to 5MPH stops are required, you will need to find an off-road location that is safe. Bedding-in should be done within the first few miles after the Brembos are installed, otherwise uneven pad deposits may accumulate on the rotors, which will cause steering-wheel shudder.

Cheers, Daniel.
