UFMotorsport S62 Intake Air Temperature Sensor (IATS) Relocation Kit for BMW M5 (e39) and Z8 (e52)

BeastPower Motorsports is the exclusive worldwide vendor of the UFMotorsport S62 Intake Air Temperature Sensor (IATS) Relocation Kit (v2) for the M5 (e39). Exclusivity has been provided by the manufacturer, UFMotorsport.

The factory placement of the BMW M5’s air intake temperature sensor is inside the airflow meter (AFM). Since the airflow meters sit directly behind the radiator, the factory sensor sends inaccurately high temperature readings to the DME when the engine is hot. When the DME receives these false high readings, the engine’s performance is retarded to protect itself. In tests, the temperature inside the AFM is often over 45 degrees F higher than the actual air temperature outside the car. This kit relocates the temperature sensor to the front of the car inside the airdam, where it will always send the true temperature reading to the engine’s DME. This simple modification will ensure consistent performance when the engine is at full operating temperature.

The new version 2.0 which was released in January 2005, incorporates hardware improvements, including an error-proof 3-way crimp connector as well as a Delrin jam nut that will provide lower heat-retention properties.

Important Installation Notes:
The only problems UFMotorsport has ever seen regarding the installation of their IATS kit will result in Table 18 codes indicating AFS malfunctions. The cause of the problem is one of 2 possiblities:

  1. Wiring (check the accuracy and integrity of the 2 connections made) - Remember, the 2 wires are connected differently from each other. The ground wire is a tap, while the signal wire is a cut-and-reroute. many people accidently connect both wires in the same fashion.
  2. Location of the new sensor - If you chose to install the sensor in a different location from what was recommended in the installation instuctions, you may run into issues that will trigger the SES light. The DME is extremely sensitive to the various qualities of the air entereing the engine. If you installed the sensor in any of the intake related duct-work, you may be causing a great enough variance between the two intake channels to trigger a fault. If you drilled a hole in a duct to install the sensor, you must run a smooth bead of silicon sealant to ensure no air escapes from gaps around the newly installed sensor. Additionally, we have noticed that the presence of a sensor in the intake tract will cause a variance in air flow through that channel, at times enough to trigger an AFS (code 29) fault.

Additional Information:

  • The sensor is a Bosch variable thermosister, which has no skin, nerve endings, or perspiration tendencies, so "wind chill" is not an issue provided the sensor is not immersed in water (passing rain drops are fine).
  • The curve in the sensor readings that UFMotorsport's uses, matches the OEM sensor inside the AFM perfectly.
